SS-31 reconstitution calculator.

FDA-approvedCommon vials: 10 mg

A 10 mg vial of SS-31 dissolved in 2 mL of bacteriostatic water is 5,000 mcg per mL, which is 50 mcg per unit on a U-100 insulin syringe.

SS-31 is elamipretide, which received FDA accelerated approval in September 2025 as Forzinity for Barth syndrome only. That approved product carries its own labeling, which governs where it applies, and it says nothing about the 10 mg research vials sold under the SS-31 name, which have no labeled concentration to borrow.

More water → lower concentration → more units for the same amount.

How much bacteriostatic water for a SS-31 vial?

There is no single correct volume. More water gives a weaker solution, so each unit on the syringe holds less SS-31 and a given amount takes more units to measure, which is easier to read on the syringe scale. Less water does the opposite. These tables show the concentration for each common vial size across the usual volumes. They are arithmetic, not a recommendation of how much to take.

How many units of SS-31 is a given amount?

Divide the amount in micrograms by the micrograms per unit for your mix. With a solution of 2,500 mcg per mL, one unit on a U-100 syringe holds 25 mcg, so any amount in mcg divided by 25 gives the units. The calculator above does this for you from your own vial and water, and the tables give the per-unit figure for each common mix.

Why does SS-31 need its own calculation?

  • 10 mg in 2 mL is 5,000 mcg/mL, so each U-100 unit holds 50 mcg and 1 mg is 20 units. In 5 mL the same 1 mg is 50 units.
  • SS-31 is only four amino acids long but carries three positively charged groups, so as a salt its counter-ions are a bigger share of the powder's mass than they would be for a long peptide. The labeled 10 mg can overstate the peptide actually present by more than usual, which is the net peptide content question.
  • SS-31, elamipretide, MTP-131 and Bendavia are the same molecule. A vial labeled with any of those names is the same arithmetic.

How is SS-31 administered, and what does the math look like?

How SS-31 is actually administered, with the concentration arithmetic written out. Amounts in these tables are illustrative examples of the math, never a recommendation.

SS-31: research formats

Mitochondria-targeting peptide. Clinical trials use IV; research contexts use SC.

SS-31 (elamipretide) uses intravenous infusion in its clinical trial setting, but research use typically employs subcutaneous injection. Sold as a 10 mg vial.

SS-31 reconstitution: common questions

Is SS-31 FDA-approved?

As elamipretide (Forzinity), it received accelerated approval in September 2025 for Barth syndrome, and continued approval may depend on confirmatory evidence. For every other use it is investigational, and a research vial sold as SS-31 is not the approved product.

How many units is 1 mg of SS-31?

On 10 mg in 2 mL (5,000 mcg/mL) it is 20 units. On 10 mg in 5 mL (2,000 mcg/mL) it is 50 units. The amount of peptide is the same; only the volume carrying it changes.

Does the salt form change the calculator's answer?

The arithmetic uses the labeled mass, so it is exact for the powder as labeled. If net peptide content is below 100%, each unit carries proportionally less peptide than shown, and a label that does not state net content leaves that gap open.

What the evidence on SS-31 actually shows

Knowing the concentration is not the same as knowing whether to use it. These are the strongest studies behind the SS-31 profile, labelled with the study type PubMed itself assigns.

Before you use any of this

This page is arithmetic on numbers you enter. It does not recommend an amount of SS-31, and nothing here is medical advice. For what the published evidence actually supports, read the SS-31 profile, and for regulatory status see is SS-31 legal. Reviewed June 1, 2026.
