Using the unit converters.

Micrograms to milligrams, milligrams to IU, and micrograms to syringe units, plus why an IU is not a mass unit.

Most unit confusion in this field comes from four scales that look interchangeable and are not: mass, volume, syringe units, and international units. The converters handle each one, and the distinctions below are worth understanding rather than trusting to a tool.

Mass: nanograms, micrograms, milligrams, grams.

This is a straight decimal ladder. One milligram is one thousand micrograms, and one gram is one thousand milligrams. Everything here is pure arithmetic, and it is also where the tenfold errors happen, because a vial label in milligrams and a target in micrograms sit one careless decimal apart.

Mass to syringe units.

You cannot convert a mass to syringe units without a concentration. A microgram figure becomes a volume only once the calculator knows the vial strength and the diluent volume, which is why the mcg to units converter asks for both. On a U-100 syringe, the resulting volume is then read as units where 100 units equals 1 mL.

International units.

An international unit measures biological activity, not mass, and the conversion factor is specific to the substance. For somatropin the widely used factor is roughly 3 IU per milligram, which the mg to IU converter applies. That factor does not transfer to any other compound, and applying an IU figure from one substance to another is meaningless rather than merely imprecise.

What to check before trusting any conversion.

  1. 01Confirm which unit the vial label actually uses, rather than assuming.
  2. 02Confirm the scale printed on your syringe, since U-100 and U-40 syringes look similar and are not.
  3. 03Re-enter the diluent volume if you changed it, because every mass-to-units result depends on it.
  4. 04Sanity-check the answer against the syringe illustration before drawing anything.

The converters are free on the site with no account, and the same math runs inside the app against the vials you have already entered, so you are not retyping strength and volume each time.
