Dissolving a lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptide into liquid for research use.

Reconstitution is the laboratory step of dissolving a freeze-dried peptide in a sterile solvent to produce a solution. Peptides are shipped in dried form because they are far more stable that way, and once in solution they are considerably more vulnerable to degradation from heat, light, agitation, repeated freezing and thawing, and microbial contamination. The relevant background facts are general ones: the choice of solvent affects both solubility and stability, some peptides do not dissolve readily in water alone, adding liquid too forcefully can damage the molecule, and a solution has a much shorter useful life than a sealed dried vial, which is why refrigeration and protection from light are standard laboratory practice. Sterility is a separate concern from purity, since a chemically pure peptide dissolved in a non-sterile way is still contaminated. This site deliberately does not provide reconstitution volumes, concentration math, or any dosing guidance, and the term is defined here only so the vocabulary in the surrounding literature is comprehensible. The misunderstanding worth correcting is that reconstitution is a trivial mechanical step. It is the point at which handling errors most often compromise a preparation, and it is also where research-use material is most obviously not manufactured for injection into people.
