The placebo response is measured improvement that follows an inert treatment or, more broadly, the act of being treated: the ritual of administration, the expectation of benefit, and the attention that comes with participating. It is not imaginary, and it is not confined to reported feelings. Expectation demonstrably influences pain perception, fatigue, mood, sleep quality, and some measurable physiological responses, and it operates through identifiable biological pathways. This is why blinded control groups exist. Two additional effects are usually tangled up with it and are worth separating. Regression to the mean means people typically seek treatment when symptoms are at their worst, and symptoms fluctuate, so improvement would often have followed anyway. Natural history means many conditions, especially injuries and minor complaints, resolve with time regardless of intervention. The relevance to peptide research is unavoidable, because the outcomes most often reported anecdotally, such as recovery, energy, sleep, joint comfort, and general wellbeing, are precisely those most susceptible to all three effects, and they are usually reported by people who paid money and expected to improve. This is not a claim that any given compound does nothing. It is the reason personal testimony cannot settle the question either way.
