The formation of new blood vessels.
Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels from vessels that already exist. It is central to wound healing, because repairing tissue requires a blood supply to deliver oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells to the site, and it is a frequent topic in research on repair peptides, several of which are described as promoting new vessel formation or as acting on vascular growth-factor pathways. The process is tightly controlled in healthy adults, with pro-angiogenic and anti-angiogenic signals held in balance and vessel growth switched on locally when tissue demands it. The reason to treat angiogenesis claims carefully is that the same process is not always desirable. Tumours require a blood supply to grow beyond a small size, which is why an entire class of cancer drugs works by blocking angiogenesis rather than promoting it, and unwanted vessel growth in the eye is a cause of vision loss. A compound that broadly encourages vessel formation is therefore not straightforwardly a healing compound, and this is one of the clearest cases where a mechanism that sounds purely beneficial has a well-documented other side. Most of the peptide research in this area is preclinical, so the honest summary is a plausible mechanism with limited human outcome evidence.
