Melanotan II is not approved by any major regulator, is not legally marketed as a medicine, and has drawn consumer warnings from the FDA, the UK MHRA, and Australia's TGA. The closely related linear analog melanotan I became afamelanotide, sold as Scenesse, and it is genuinely FDA- and EMA-approved, but only to increase pain-free light exposure in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare inherited photosensitivity condition, and not for tanning.
