Humanin alternatives.

7 compounds compared to Humanin, ranked by published evidence tier and regulatory status, not by what's marketed hardest.

Why people look for an alternative

Humanin was found the way few of these compounds were: in a 2001 screen for factors that protected neurons against Alzheimer's-related insults, encoded inside the mitochondrial 16S rRNA region. The cytoprotective story is genuinely interesting and the clinical story does not exist. Humanin and its analog HNG are not approved by the FDA, EMA, or any major regulator, are research-use-only, and have no completed published Phase 1 human trial. Their WADA status should not be assumed either, since exogenous peptides with growth-factor-like signaling can fall under broad categories. MOTS-c, the other mitochondrial-derived peptide here, shares the same evidence gap rather than closing it.

Humanin is a 24-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP), one of the first members of a class of small peptides encoded by short open reading frames within the mitochondrial genome rather than the nuclear genome.

How this list is built

An “alternative” here means a compound that shares Humanin's mechanism pathway or sits in the same category, not a marketing substitute. Each is ordered by PepCue's evidence tier (a weighted 0–100 score across human data, safety, replication and regulatory clarity), then by whether it's actually approved. This is a research reference, not medical or purchasing advice: an alternative sitting higher on evidence does not mean it's right, safe, or legal for any given use. Reviewed June 1, 2026.
